Art By The Loch

is the design and creation

of detailed word maps.

These can include our wonderful lochs,

majestic mountains,

pretty villages and towns,

or anything that makes up our

amazing countryside and culture here in Scotland.

THE STARTING POINT - I have been living in The Trossachs for the past 15 years and I have been passionate about exploring this beautiful landscape here in the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.  This has inspired me to get creative - making my first word map of the National Park.

DESIGN - For each new map I will carry out detailed research and then choose the words I want to use to form the shape I require.

CREATING -  I then type up all the words and then manually move them to create the desired shape on the screen, adjusting each word size, font, colour - no computer programme is used to produce the shapes automatically, they are all created using my hand eye co-ordination - so each map is a labour of love to design.

Two years on and my word map collection keeps growing - check out my current range of maps

ROUTES - The West Highland Way is my fourth word map design.  I would love to say I've walked it all myself...  but there are many many others who have - as a personal challenge, for fun and to raise a large amount of money for great charities across the country.

HISTORY - Scotland has so much to offer and the history of our Clans & Castles are always of great interest to visitors who come here from across the world.

This word map hopes to capture a flavour of our clans and where their roots began, plots the locations of some of the castles - ruined or lived in today.  As well as the major battles which shaped our land and history.

MALT WHISKY- I just had to do this one, with a father and husband who love a wee dram and I would not be forgiven if I didn't create this word map...

Scotland is known around the world for its iconic drink -  "Uisge Beatha - water of life".  Famous for its history, the manufacturing, the smell, the taste and the general romance of it all.

This is a perfect gift for someone who loves their whisky.

MULL RALLY- The Isle of Mull continues to give me inspiration, combined with a husband who is mad about cars and who has been visiting the Mull Rally for over 25 years, means this map has been great fun to create.  The map includes the stages driven, key places and words associated with the Rally itself.

This year the Rally has chosen OUCH (uk) as their fundraising charity.  So approximately 25% from each map sale will go to this great charity - see my new SHOP page to order.

SCOTTISH GIN - This map was inspired by a visit to The Storehouse at Foulis Ferry.  They currently stock all my Scottish series maps and they were keen to add to this collection with a Gin Map.  They have a fantastic collect of gins for sale and they have been very helpful in the creation of this map.

The number of Scottish Gin producers is constantly growing and they use an amazing assortment of botanicals to flavour their gins - my map hopes to capture some of these wonderful elements.

This is a perfect gift for someone who loves their gin.

NEXT ISLAND - Islay has a number of connections for me with  family routes on the island, friends with a holiday home here and our own house being named after one of the island's whiskies - so this was another must for a word map.

THE NORTH - This word map was created as a commission piece but when I had finished it I thought it was a good one to add to my collection.  It has also inspired me to start a Sutherland word map...

CAIRNGORMS NATIONAL PARK - this is my second National Park word map.  This is another area which I know well as it is an annual holiday destination.  There is so much to do in the Cairngorms both in the winter and summer, with wonderful outdoor activities to enjoy no matter what the weather conditions!

PERTH & KINROSS - this word map was inspired as I was going to attend the Perth Craft Market before Christmas.  I wanted to have an area specific word map for the wonderful customers who come to this market no matter the weather conditions - lucky the day I was there was a beautiful dry cold day!

SCOTTISH MOUNTAINS - this is my fifth Scottish Series word map - Scottish Munros.  I live with many Munros around me in the Trossachs and just love the skyline as you drive north through Glencoe, up into Lochaber, Inverness and onwards into Sutherland.  This maps tries to capture an essence of  the scale of these mountains.  It comes with a wee health warning for the purist Munro Baggers - not all the mountain names are positioned where they actually are.... I have taken artistic licence - taking the highest mountain within a mountain group and have tried to place it as correctly as possible.  All other mountain names are spread across the Scotland map.  Hope you still like the concept of the map and can enjoy trying to find your favourite mountain - somewhere on the map!!!

ISLE OF LISMORE - this was inspired after various chats with retailers at Scotland's Trade Fair in January.  This wonderful island is a little gem laying off the coast of Argyll, accessiable from Port Appin by foot or by Oban if you feel the need to take a car.

ISLE OF ARRAN - a word map of Arran has always been on my list of do's and I'm so very pleased to have now completed it.  I have lovely neighbours who used to live on the island and very kindly provided me with lots of information.  I was also very lucky that the staff of the Arran Distillery offered support and encouragement in pulling the final version together - thank you to everyone for their help.

ISLE OF SKYE - my sister lived on the island for a number of years and I was lucky to be able to visit and explore this beautiful island. The stunning scenery, mountain ranges and it's history all mean it is much loved and visited by many.  I have tried to capture some of this in this word map of Skye.

SCOTTISH GOLF - this is my sixth Scottish Series word map. It seemed an obvious map to make because we are "the home of golf" and we have over 500 courses!!!! This was just too many to try to put into my map, so the it only includes 18 hole courses (413 of them...) plus a few 9 holes to fill in a gap here and there.  It also tries to capture all aspects of golfing - from the terminology to equipment - and a few of the early golf founders. Hope you can find your favourite course on the map - it may not be exactly in the correct position but it'll not be far away - a bit like when you are looking for your golf ball in the rough!

SCOTTISH FOOD - the seventh Scottish word map to be added to the Series. I enjoyed researching this map with my parents - my mum loves food and cooking for others, you HAVE to eat when you call round to see her!  What a wonderful collection of food we have here in Scotland, fresh products grown, reared, harvested from our land and from the sea.   We have world renowned produce - from haggis to salmon -  and it is definitely a highlight for visitors coming to Scotland to sample some of them.  Exploring old traditional dishes with wonderful names and ingredients.  When my mother was growing up on Mull food was limited but if you lived in the countryside you definitely had a richer selection, and she remembers my grandmother posting (!) rabbits to family in Glasgow to supplement their diet.  Today we can all enjoy the eclectic mix of food available here in Scotland.
